Mérida
and the Yucatán
The beautiful city of Mérida is the capital of the state of Yucatán. It has a large population of indiginous Mayan people, and many of its inhabitants are billingual in Spanish and Mayan. In the Centro, the Plaza Grande is a popular place to hang out and find vendors and authentic food, especially on Sunday. The high temperautre averages about 91°F, but during the hot months of April, May, and June, temperature often reaches above 100°F. The Yucatán is a very distinct place. Separated from México, it has its own culture. There are specific Yucatecan foods and the Spanish here is also a little bit different. The people here are very proud to be Yucatecan.
